Next ASQ Meeting - Sept 11, 2007

Dear ASQ 1003 Members - Please join us for our first kickoff event of 2007-08 as we enjoy a private tour of Bell's Brewery, Inc.

Plant Tour: Bell's Brewery, Inc

Bell's Brewery, Inc., founded by Larry Bell as a home-brewing supply shop in 1983, sold its first beer in 1985. Originally brewing in a 15-gallon soup kettle, the company grew rapidly on top of its first year's 135 barrels (BBL = 31 gal.) of production. Bell's Brewery has grown from a tiny operation renting part of a former plumbing supply warehouse, to a bustling, regional craft brewery that plays a role in changing the beerscape of our nation.

Although the micro-brewing, "craft brewing" revolution began on the West coast in the 1970s, the Midwest saw this brewing development much later. Bell's Brewery, Inc. stands as the oldest craft-brewer East of Boulder, Colorado. After struggling against the tide of a major-domestic beer market while producing robust, full-bodied ales, Bell's Brewery began to see the demand for craft-brewing grow dramatically. Originally self-distributed, Larry and crew brewed, bottled and delivered all of the beer to market for the company's first four years. By 1989, Bell's Brewery was shipping over 500 barrels annually and assigned its first wholesaler, while continuing to establish itself across the State of Michigan. Soon venturing into Indiana and Chicago, Bell's Brewery had continued growth and its Bell's brands were soon known across the Midwest for their unique style and flavor. Bell's Brewery has built a nationwide reputation as a creative and talented brewery.

2002 proved to be an intense and formative year for the company. While working hard to build a new production facility in order to provide for its ongoing growth, Bell's Brewery still managed to increase production over 15%, brewing and shipping over 31,500 barrels of beer. A fifty-barrel Steinecker brewhouse drives the new 32,000 square foot brewery, located in nearby Comstock, Michigan. It is complimented by several new fermenters and an integrated bottling hall that includes a new Krones filler. The "Krum Avenue plant" brewed and packaged its first beer in late December, 2002. The original Kalamazoo Avenue plant will remain active brewing beer for the Eccentric Cafe and specialty projects. Together, the two plants give Bell's Brewery, Inc. a potential annual capacity of close to 60,000 barrels of production. Currently, the brewery sells its beer across a nine-state Midwestern trade area, through a network of over thirty quality wholesalers.

Our ongoing goal is to brew thoughtfully, creatively and artistically, bringing an authentic and pleasant experience to all of our customers through our unique beers. We look forward to sharing our beers with you.

The Eccentric Cafe:
On June 11, 1993, Bell's Brewery, Inc. became the first Michigan brewery to serve beer by the glass to the public. Their Eccentric Cafe offers customers a chance to taste many of their well known beers, as well as small batch brews that are not distributed outside of the pub. Visitors enjoy its warm atmosphere and spacious beer garden. The Eccentric also features interesting food, an extensive collection of art and live music Thursday thru Sunday.

Milwaukee, WI, March 14, 2007

The Battle Creek-Kalamazoo Section 1003 of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) has earned the 2005-06 Section Management Process Total Quality Award, one of the highest honors a section can earn in the Society. The Section had also won this award last year.

The Battle Creek-Kalamazoo Section 1003 will be honored at ASQ’s 61st annual conference; the World Conference on Quality and Improvement on April 28, 2007 in Orlando, FL. Members of the ASQ Board of Directors will present the award to the section.

Corporate Quality Manager
Our client is one of the fastest growing food packaging companies in the USA with a clientele that includes most of the recognized restaurants, hotels and airlines. This can be attributed to many factors that include technical competence, a market strategy that makes them immune from low cost offshore competitors, new envisioned and passionate leadership that can meet the customer's quality/supply requirements and manufacturing efficiencies. They are small enough to be flexible but big enough to succeed. Their people have found them to be an exciting and rewarding company

This position has been created, at this point in their growth, to encompass the quality synergies of the various manufacturing plants under a common direction

You will be reporting to the General Manager of Operations, a highly respected professional in the industry and a dynamic leader.

This is a key position within the organization. It will be most challenging but rewarding as you create the strategy, develop the people and implement the systems to bring them to even greater levels of success.

You will be personally responsible to develop, implement and direct the total quality systems for the organization, from raw materials to final acceptance by the customer.

The location is Fort Wayne

o One of the greatest places I have ever lived, having come from former major metropolitan cities
o Small enough to avoid the challenges of living in a big city and big enough to provide all our needs.
o Well situated - at most 2 hours from Indy, 3 hours from Chicago, Columbus Ohio, Detroit and 3.5 hours from Cleveland and Cincinnati etc
o It has one of the lowest cost of living in the USA, great schooling/restaurants/religious facilities, international airport, etc
o Great place to bring up a family
- Relocation assistance is provided

To succeed you will need to be someone driven by the desire for continual improvement. You will need to have the balance of talent, people skills and sense of urgency as you bring the quality teams, of different manufacturing locations, under a common direction to success

Ideally you will be in the top management of a smaller company or with a larger organization in a midlevel leadership role looking to grow into a more challenging and rewarding position and still have more opportunity for growth.

Please do not apply unless you have at least

Four-year BS degree in a technical discipline from a respected university
Successful background in a manufacturing environment
Meaningful results as a Quality Leader
Knowledge and experience with all the recognized quality management tools
Are prepared to commit to vigorous leadership to bring the company to greater common quality levels?

Quality Engineer

We are: short run, low volume. Mostly heavy truck now but improving the diversity. We have TS but only the beginnings. Very busy and growing with some pain. It is a very fast paced environment that seems to be constantly changing. Not sure that makes sense? Anyway - the interested person should have strong skills with particular experience in metal fabrication. Having a positive attitude would be a real plus.
