Minutes of Recent Meetings

American Society for Quality
Section 306 – Greater Danbury
Executive Board Meeting Summary
Wednesday, October 26, 2006

Present, Dean Applegreen, Don Costello, Cynthia Edgar, Lee French, Don Geramita, Steve Griffin, Bob Grossman, Phil Tavella, and Vera the Waitress.

The meeting was chaired by Don Geramita. It was announced that Joe DeCarlo has resigned from the position of Section Chair for a combination of business and personal reasons. Don Geramita, Vice Chair and Chair Elect has now become the Chair for this year and will remain in the position until June 2008. To make it official, we had a drink in his honor.

We next discussed the Section’s future – whether to continue as an independent section or merge with another. Companies are not supporting ASQ membership. Our own Executive Committee participation is down. Steve, Joe, Bob and Rich have indicated that they will not be able to serve on the Board next year. After much debate we concluded that we are split down the middle on this subject, with half wanting to throw in the towel, and the other half hating to see it end.

So we did what one might expect. We decided not to decide., We’ll think about it and discuss the subject again at the next meeting. In the meantime, Lee has indicated that he would like to run for Vice Chair / Chair Elect next year. Dean will take over the newsletter (editing and distribution), Cynthia is willing to continue as Treasurer. Steve opined that all we needed was 5-6 people to keep the Section going.

Cynthia was not able to give a full financial report, since she had just returned from a business trip. We have about $3,800 in the bank. We’re getting auto deposits from ASQ to our bank account. Bob sent Cynthia a copy of the format for the annual budget, and Cynthia will prepare one to be submitted to ASQ National.

We congratulated Dean on the changes to our newsletter, and had a drink in his honor. Some of the members didn’t get theirs in the mail, so Dean will send out another mailing.

The meeting at Two Steps was incorrectly stated as November 19, which is a Sunday. It is, in fact, November 9th, a Thursday. We need a minimum of 30 people. So far we have the following: Bob (2), Don G (2), Phil (2), Lee (2), Steve (2), and Dean (2). Well, that’s twelve so far. We need to beat the bushes, folks. We need bodies! Cost will be $20 to members and guests. (The Section’s cost will be $30 per). Bring friends / Invite strangers, etc.

We next discussed the Website. Lee can get us one of our own (since our hits through ASQ have been nil) for $100 - $200. Dean is willing to work with Lee to build a website to attract interest. Dean and Lee will work together to examine whether we should invest the money to get our own site.

So far the schedule for this year is as follows:

• Thursday, November 9, 2006 – Restaurant Quality – Speaker Tom Devine, Two Steps Restaurant, 5 Ives Street, Danbury. Meeting starts at 7. Hard Core 5:30 at the bar.
• Wednesday, January 17, 2007. Joint Meeting with AIPICS. Subject is C-TPAT. Don has a list of renowned speakers. At the Stony Hill Inn.
• Wednesday, February 21, 2007. RoHS Compliance. Speaker is Tim McGrady. Probably at Adrienne’s. Bob will work with Adrienne on the Menu and pricing. Phil is coordinating the event.

• Wednesday, May 23, 2007. Annual Dinner at Adrienne’s. Bob is coordinating. Cost to members will be $35

To the best of my recollection, this is what happened at our meeting. Did I get it right? E-mail me with your comments, opinions and witticisms.

Executive Board Meeting Summary
Wednesday, August 9, 2006

Present, Dean Applegreen, Don Costello, Zane Dargaty, Joe, DeCarlo, Lee French, Don Geramita, Steve Griffin, Bob Grossman, Jim Standish, and Phil Tavella

Conspicuously absent: Cynthia Edgar and Rich Rastelli. Absent, but with us in spirit: Ron Benson and Vera the Waitress.

The invisible gavel struck one end of the table at 6 P.M., cutting short the biting repartee between members at the other end. Order was successfully restored by our Chair, Joe DeCarlo and the meeting commenced.

First on the agenda was a hearty welcome to Dean Applegreen who will be responsible for mailing out notices and newsletters. We had a round in his honor.

Next came news on the financial front. Steve hadn’t actually turned over the books to Cynthia Edgar, so he was able to give us a quick update on our status. We have approximately $3,000 at this point. The contribution from ASQ National will go down slightly again this year. Still, our expenses last year were relatively under control and we are not that far down from where we were a year ago.

The Web Site

Lee updated us on the web site. It’s accessed through ASQ’s and we have no way of knowing how many hits we get. Lee mentioned that Tappan Zee had their own and he volunteered to look into the cost for doing that.

In the meantime, Lee will update the site when the newsletter comes out next.

Newsletter

We will try to get an early newsletter out. Joe will write a “From the Chair” article, and we will publish the meeting schedule as we flesh it out. Also, we have a guest article from Timothy Noble, and that will be published as well.

Meeting Plans for 2006 – 2007

October / November – Foxwoods. Bob will forward possible dates and each of you will indicate 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices. We need to have a sizeable group from the Committee to be able to have a group size of 20-30. The topic is Quality in Security. Cynthia will work with Foxwoods. The suggested restaurant is The Cedars, which is a steakhouse that also offers fish and vegetarian dinners.

December – Our holiday get together is planned at Two Steps Restaurant in Danbury. Bob will contact Tom Devine and try to arrange a cooking class.

January – We’re considering a joint meeting with AIPICS – you remember, the group that stiffed us last time. Don Costello will work with AIPIC’s Martin Tuite, who will offer up his first borne to be held hostage until they pay their share.

The topic will be Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism. Don C will work with AIPICS. Don G will talk to people in Customs and try to get a speaker.

March – RoHS – Restrictions on Hazardous Substances. Phil has a contact, a guy named Tim Grady. He’ll follow up and hopefully we’ll have a speaker.

April – Dean Applegreen will attempt to get a Deming speaker for April.

May – Our annual dinner will be held at Adrienne’s. Details to follow.

Other Stuff

Cynthia needs to turn over the e-mail information to Dean.

Steve needs to turn over the financial papers to Cynthia.

Everyone needs to follow up on what they promised to do.

Steve paid the bill and we split.
